Think about each person individually. What makes that person get up and go to work in the morning? Sure, they come for the money, but why this job rather than another? What will make them "turn and burn" for you? Ask them! Then find ways to build more of that into their job.
Since you are judged by the success of others, ask them, "What do you need to be successful? How can I support you? What roadblocks need to be cleared to make that happen?" They will be more than happy to tell you. Then be their advocate and clear the road to their success!
Don't take tasks from your workers. (Remember, you've moved from being a Specialist to being a Generalist.) Ask, "What's the next step for you to take?" Give them direction to help them grow, then let them go! Delegate!
Try this exercise - Stand up. Put your hands out in front of you. Now put them behind you and sit down, with your hands underneath you. This is the management position. You can talk and give direction and encouragement, but keep your hands off their work! They are the technicians. They get their pride from doing their work well. Let them!
